This update is a free update for existing Retrospect 7.5 customers and contains several changes including support for a new Macintosh client and localization into several new languages.

This update also includes bug fixes for the following issues:

Retrospect Backup User (RBU): In Retrospect 7.6 the RBU is supported on Windows Vista and Server 2008.

Unable to backup WMI Repository: Version 7.5.508 of Retrospect introduced a bug that prevented Retrospect from successfully backing up the WMI Repository on XP.

Catalog out of Sync error: Retrospect 7.5.508 would sometimes report a catalog out of sync message when adding a new member to a backup set.

Hang when poling Exchange mailbox: Previous versions of Retrospect could hang when polling an Exchange mailbox.

Multiple Exchange 2007 servers in one domain not recognized: If multiple Exchange 2007 servers are running in the same domain, the previous version of Retrospect would only see the last server that was logged in. This release fixes this issue so that Retrospect now correctly recognizes and will protect multiple Exchange servers in the same domain.

Multiple Versions of SQL on one system: If SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 were installed on the same machine, previous versions of Retrospect would only see and backup the SQL 2005 instance.

Compare error backing up JPG files: This release fixes a problem where Retrospect would report a compare error for some JPG files that were backed up.

Error -540 backing up Linux clients: In previous versions, Retrospect would report and error -540 (trouble creating service) when backing up Linux clients.

Media verification compare errors: This release fixes an issue where Retrospect would incorrectly report compare errors when using media verification.

Also included in this release is a new Retrospect Activity Monitor tool. When Retrospect is running under a different user account than the currently logged-in user, the Retrospect Monitor can be used to:

Stop any or all Retrospect executions
Quit Retrospect
Re-launch Retrospect as the currently logged-in user

EMC Retrospect announces a new add-on available for both server-level and home office versions of Retrospect for Windows.

Retrospect Continuous Backup Agent combines a central policy server with lightweight desktop agents to provide up-to-the-moment protection of critical files on users’ desktops and laptops. Simply set group or enterprise-wide policies on the server—the types of files to protect, how long to retain older versions, etc.—and the agents automatically enforce those policies. Every time a protected file is changed, the Retrospect Continuous Backup agent saves the incremental changes locally, and optionally sends them to a central storage repository on the network. Users can then retrieve any previous version of a file by simply right-clicking in Windows Explorer, even when they’re not connected to the network. This add-on to EMC’s Retrospect backup server complements the current data protection of your PCs with continuous protection of all critical files. Available in packs for 1, 10, 25, 50 and 100 users.

Retrospect Continuous Backup Professional provides up-to-the-moment protection of your important files as they change throughout the day. Every time a file is saved, Retrospect Continuous Backup makes a copy for safekeeping. Because only the changes are stored, very little disk space is used. Optionally, these changes can be copied to external or network storage for an additional level of protection, and Retrospect can further protect all the copies with regularly scheduled backups. Should you ever need to recover a previous version of a file—even one from just a few minutes ago—it’s as simple as right-clicking in Windows Explorer. This add-on to EMC Retrospect Professional complements the current data protection of your PC with continuous protection of all your important files. Available in 1- or 3-user editions.

The following news release was issued by EMC this morning.

MOZY RELEASE FOR MAC SETS INDUSTRY STANDARD FOR UNLIMITED ONLINE BACKUP

First Full-Featured Unlimited Online Backup Service for Apple OS X;

MozyHome for Mac Immediately Available at $4.95 Per Month

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Thursday, May 1, 2008 – Mozy, Inc., part of the Cloud Infrastructure and Services Division of EMC (NYSE:EMC), today announced the release of MozyHome for Mac, the industry’s first unlimited online backup service for the Mac. Mac users in the home can now safely and cost-effectively back up all of their digital information over the Internet. With more than 700,000 total users worldwide and 6.2 billion files backed up, Mozy is the leading online backup service of choice for consumers and small businesses.

“Mozy is honoring its roots by augmenting its service to consumers and small businesses,” said Vance Checketts, chief operating officer for Mozy. “We’ve had more than 43,000 individuals participate in our public beta and have devoted thousands of hours of development to this new MozyHome for Mac release.”

Designed as a consumer service, MozyHome for Mac offers 2 gigabytes of online backup absolutely free with no expiration date, or $4.95 a month for unlimited online backup capacity. Mozy automatically protects all computer files including photos, music, videos and financial documents from data loss in the event of hard drive crash, accidental deletion, natural disaster or theft. All files are encrypted with 448-bit Blowfish encryption and the encrypted files are transferred via a 128-bit SSL connection – the same encryption used for online banking – during the backup process for extra security. After the initial backup, Mozy only backs up incremental changes to files and folders, meaning subsequent backups run extremely fast. In addition to the most recent backup, Mozy keeps 30 days worth of file versions as well. In the event of data loss, files may be recovered via the Mozy client software, downloaded from the Mozy website, or by ordering the files on a set of DVDs from Mozy.

“I had just completed my transition from Tiger to Leopard when my hard drive crashed,” said Donald Malm, who participated in the MozyHome for Mac beta. “The restore of all my data from Mozy was completed without a single error. My Quicken data was exactly where I had left off the day before the crash. Never have I made a better purchasing decision since I started in the insurance and financial system design industry 52 years ago.”

Later this summer, Mozy will release a business version of its Mac service to enhance its MozyPro and MozyEnterprise offerings. More than 20,000 business customers already trust Mozy to back up their data, and Mozy is currently backing up more than 7.5 petabytes, the equivalent to 7.8 million gigabytes, across multiple data centers. Businesses interested in an online backup service for the Mac can sign up to be notified at www.mozy.com/mac/probeta.

With the addition of the MozyHome for Mac service, EMC offers Mac users the industry’s most robust backup and recovery options. Other data protection offerings for Mac users include EMC Retrospect for Macintosh and EMC LifeLine software.
