I'm running an automated backup script from a laptop computer and the destination drive is a IOMEGA NAS system on the company network. Couple of folders as source with the normal backup parameters.

The script is scheduled to run every Monday at 13:00, and if the user stays connected to the office network, it works fine. Even if the computer is shutdown during the actual scheduled date/time, Next time when to computer boots to Windows, Retrospect launches and runs the script. Works like a charm.

However if the user is away from the office with his laptop, retrospect will still auto launch at 13:00, trying to run the script. This time informing the user that the backup set cannot be found, since the user is not connected to the company network.

You can easily cancel the announcement and stop the script. Doing this leads to no backup taken, since the media cannot be found.

The idea of course would be that Retrospect logs this as a non finished script and will try to run it again when the media is available. The user in this case, cannot be expected to run the script manually later on.

However, when the laptop was re-attached to the office network after a failed script. I got an announcement saying.
"Backup media was needed before "the next Monday date here".
Appending to "The actual Backup Set at the local network" .

Retrospect however did not actually launch and continued like the last scheduled script had been run successfully, moving the next scheduled date to next Monday.

Question is:
Does appending mean it did the backup, or should Retrospect actually launch and run the failed script again, now that the media is present ?
The Retrospect folder contains RestorePoint folders, in which there are over 500 RDB files, most of which are 614 MB.

As I only want the backup on the D drive, can I safely delete these files on the C and K drives?

It appears the backups were circular - I have now changed the settings to back up C and K to D

Thanks
I am not able to use setup. When I load Retrospect Express HD 1.1.127 and press setup, nothing happens. The external blue light intermittently flashes on the Maxtor external drive, but no other activity.

There are some recent restore points, but when I click back up now, nothing happens then either.

I basically cannot be sure the software works at all.

I changed the name of the rbc file to see if that would help (to ###.rbc.old). After doing so the restore points went from 272 to 0, and returned to 272 when I renamed the file back.

I have Windows XP2. Had same problems with prior version of Express HD (1.0.x).

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Windows XP SP2. All my data has been backed up onto an external Western Digital Hard drive on my network.
I went through the steps of article 9573 (removed the .rbc file, then ran the backup setup again). This time, unlike what the article said, the original backup parameters were not there, nor did anything happen when I clicked on the Finish button (no "back maintenance" activity, which I had previously prompted for). No restore points. I can clearly see the backup files on my external drive. When I try and restore from another computer, there is nothing to see either.
Any help would be most appreciated

Problem was the drive was full and it wasn't doing the automatic maintenance of deleting old restore points. I tried to manually delete restore points, Retrospect Express HD worked for 7 - 8 hours and the restore points were still there when it finished. So then I deleted the directory "Retrospect Restore Points". When viewing the drive with Windows Explorer, it shows a capacity of 190 GB with 170 GB available. So apparently, the hidden 'system file' or directory called "recycler" has about 20 gigs of files in it.

I'm running a de-frag on the drive right now and can see that it is moving a bunch of .rdb files.

First question is: Is it normal for there to be about 20GB of files in the hidden 'system files' on the drive when there are no restore points?

Is it safe to delete all the files in the "Recycler" directory? If it is okay to delete them, do I just do a plain old highlight and delete via Windows Explorer?

If a reformat is recommended, I would appreciate instructions (or a link to instructions) on how to do that and get Retrospect Express HD running again afterwards.

The pc is running Win XP sp2 or 3 (haven't checked). Also, I'm helping out remotely via LogMeIn.

Thanks for any help.
