Can anyone suggest a CD/DVD drive currently available on the market, for use in my E-mac.

{I don't care if I have to purchase it from the manufacturer [(on the moon)???], though shipping costs would be a killer}
I am presuming that because the drive will not open on its own accord and I can not burn a set of files to media in the drive, that it is dead.
Any suggestions.

We have a Lacie 300920 burner that is actually a NEC-3520 in a Lacie case. It is connected via firewire. It worked fine with Retrospect 6.1.126 without any RDU upgrades, including burning to DL disks.

However I recently replaced the internal G5 burner with a Pioneer 112-D. Retrospect wouldn't recognize it so I upgraded the RDU to the latest version. Retrospect than saw the drive and I figured all was good. However now when I put our DVD+R DL 8X media into the old Lacie drive it says the media is "Incompatible."

I did figure out that if I removed the RDU then the Lacie would read the DVD+R DL disks, but then the Pioneer 112 wouldn't show up.

In the course of trying to figure this out I upgraded to the latest version of Retrospect (.138) and that didn't help, either with the latest RDU or with no RDU, which is still a later RDU version than no RDU in Retrospect .126.

I tried the .101 RDU that introduced the Pioneer 112-D in Retrospect .138, that didn't help.

From reading some of the information on the site I figured I should upgrade the firmware on the Lacie. However the Lacie updater wouldn't do it and when I emailed them they said try to flash it using alternate means as their flash program doesn't support the drive. I'm about to try that by hooking it up to a PC and updating the firmware using NEC firmware, but I'm wondering if there is anything else to try before I do that?

Throughout all this, regular DVD media still works. I should probably try to try different DL media but as it's the RDU update that breaks the burner...

Thanks for any help you can provide!
Ok! I messed up. My system was working fine and in trying to fix the issue where my DVD was not showing in the Finder, I decided that I needed to "Delete the Custom Configuration for Pioneer DVD-RW DVR 107D". I have spent 2 days trying to recover my ability to back up to DVD. NO LUCK! I can not locate any files in the TRASH that look like Retrospect files or that have a deletion time and date matching my GOOF.
Today, after installing Retrospect ver. 6.1.138;
Retrospect Driver Update, ver. 6.1.13.101, I was able to get Retrospect to successfully configure my E-Mac to use CD-R media.
I have been all over the site and have tried to download (ftp://ftp.dantz.com/pub/updates/rdu61.dmg) and have been unsuccessful. I believe that this file has RDU 5.1.103 which is the Minimum Driver Update that is certified to work with my Drive.

How do I fix, this problem, I know someone out there knows. Thanks for your assistance.
Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz
1 GB Memory (have 2 GB, just not installed yet)

So here's the deal: We have data on the server as well as an external Drive. We set up an easyScript to alternate and proceeded with the backup (Fresh). This covered approx. 36 DVD+RWs and took about a week (not switching overnight and forgetting to switch a disc) for each A + B backup set.

First go around we used Philips DVD+RW 1-4x write speed (which worked in the old G4 server), then moved to Memorex DVD+RW 4x, then to RiData DWD+RW 8x. ALL of these media would have problems (the RiData was the worst) most of the errors were 101 and 102 errors. Usually 3 out of every 10 discs where shot. Sometimes I;d be asked to reinsert for the SAME disc, other times, it would ask for the NEXT disc (even though it still threw the error).

Errors:
These crop up what seems randomly. The bulk of the errros are 102.
Device trouble: “1-Server Backup A”, error 100 (device rejected command).

Trouble writing: “30-Server Backup B” (2134638592), error 102 (trouble communicating).

Device trouble: “31-Server Backup B”, error 105 (unexpected end of data).

I've recently started trying to get our recent IBM TS3100 Tape Library auto-loader to talk nicely to Retrospect 6 for Mac OS X.

I CAN see this LTO3 drive in Retrospect, as "IBM Ultrium 3 DC, SCSI" in the Storage Device manager.

Or, as "IBM ULT3580-TD3" in the Device Status section of Storage Device manager.

But it is seen as a single drive (i.e. it sees the contents of the main drive bay). None of my library is visible there in the device manager, as per other user posts of how Retrospect should look when a library is visible.

I've added a dozen tapes to the library (with correct barcodes etc.), and Retrospect sees the individual tapes correctly... But the only way to "swap" the tapes, is the old fashioned 'eject' each one out of the main drive, back into the left or right cartridge, and then manually 'move' the next tape into the main drive.

(i.e. autoloading functions not available).

Here are the vital statistics:

-Mac Pro 2x 2.66ghz Dualie Xeon
-2GB RM
-Mac OS X 10.4.11 (desktop, not server)
-Retrospect 6.1.222 Beta 2, 'Server' serial
-Latest driver release (RDU6114101 file)
-IBM TS3100 LTO3 autoloader unit
-latest IBM library firmware update: v6.30
-latest IBM Drive firmware update: 69U2
-ATTO SCSI card (ATTO Express PCI UL5D)

Retrospect is running a confirmed SERVER license (not desktop, not workgroup). I've tried this with several different server licenses from colleagues -- confirmed as server versions also.

ATTO SCSI utility also sees the drive as "ULT3580-TD3" device.

Any tips, ideas, pointers, about where to go next (next stage), to see if this device is capable of the library functions via Retrospect?

(according to the Storage Comparision chart, the device is fully supported in Retrospect 6 for Mac, for Workgroup versions or above):

Just looking for some insights on a peculiar problem. We had a drive failure and have been in the process of tracking down an external drive for our G5 PPC system which is responsible for the network back-ups. Why external? Because we couldn't find a single internal drive that was compatible/supported by Retrospect. Actually finding a drive that is both available and supported is shockingly difficult - even for external drives.

Now we have tracked down a Legacy Lacie 16x DVD drive that is listed as supported. However, when using Retrospect, it only writes to CD's and not DVD's (other applications burn DVD's with the same drive, no problem) Fortunately, it does read the DVD back-ups but just cant write to them or new ones.

We've tried various high quality medias labeled by various different manufacturers. We've tried downgrading to the Retrospect driver to 6.1.11.101 to avoid any -R issues, we are using version 6.1.138 of Retrospect. The PPC OSX system is v10.4.11

After years of trouble free Retrospect use, we're suddenly going "Huh?" and burning tons of hours troubleshooting.

Love to hear from folks that might have found a workaround.

Thanks!
Think I know what's wrong but would appreciate your comments.

I've got a bunch of backups made over a period of years using an earlier version of Retrospect + earlier OS X + original optical drive supplied with my Power Mac G5. All the backups were made to CD-R. Using this system and media, I backed up and restored for years – no problem.

Before I upgraded my system (see 'current system' below) I tried to retrieve as much of the important old documents as possible (there were lots of them). Then, with the new system installed, I backed up again using the new software / hardware, but this time I found I had to use '+' media ('-' media would no longer work). No problem, I'm OK with that.

As you might guess, I've discovered there are some files on those old backup sets that I occasionally need. And the current system won't read those disks (and won't allow me to rebuild a catalog using those disks). I get log results like this:

+	Executing Recatalog at 3/18/2008 1:58 PM
To backup set Unit Files…
Trouble reading: “1-Unit Files” (0), error 100 (device rejected command).
Duration: 00:00:02 (00:00:02 idle/loading/preparing)

I'm guessing that the problem relates to the current system being unable to work with '-R' media. Make sense? I'd be delighted to hear that I'm wrong and that there is a simple solution to my dilemma.
I believe that all my drivers are up to date (however, I am going to double check after this post) and that my scsi connection is working. I also have a terminator in the back of the other scsi slot in the tape drive. Seems like this only happens with large amounts of data, but it is very consistent when it does happen.
