So I backup at night every 5 days, but also have a script that runs during the day on Friday morning to catch those who forget.

Something like an option so anyone who has not been backed up in twice the usual nighttime interval gets a more intrusive daytime backup.

4,000,000 object limit in Catalog?!?!

We just got bitten badly by the current version of Retrospect Server for OS X, where we seemed to be backing up fine, but we found that we couldn't do a restore. We get a "out of memory" error immediately upon trying to restore. Because of this, we're currently unable to restore a user's data (because of a crashed hard drive), even though we backed her data up just fine.

The problem is that apparently there's an unacknowledged (at least in the documentation) object limit of about 4 million objects in the Retrospect catalog. In Windows Retrospect, the limit is 4 million per subvolume, but apparently in OS X Retrospect, it's 4 million globally for the entire Catalog!

Once you're past that limit, you'll still be merrily backing up things with no errors, but you'll find suddenly that you won't be able to restore. EMC Support confirms that this is the problem.

We're looking at ways to get around this particular issue (rebuilding one or two tapes at a time into a partial Catalog until we find the data we're looking for, but that can take hours or days), but we also need to figure out what to do so that this doesn't happen again.

I was hopeful that we could put a temporary workaround into effect (i.e. Recycle more often or something) and wait until the new Retrospect X would save us, but EMC Support says that Retrospect X is based on the same old crummy Catalog with the 4 million object limit!

Is this true? If so, I'm going to have to reluctantly look elsewhere for an enterprise-worthy backup server that doesn't put secret limits into the software that suddenly come back to bite you in the butt.

Operations Log format

Can the format of this file type be converted to plain ASCII in the next build of Retrospect, like the rest of the log files for OS X. Yet, one feature is not listed: pre-backup and post-backup scripts. In other words, the ability to trigger shell scripts before starting the backup and once it is complete.
Of course Retrospect would need to take into account the return code of the scripts to handle a possible failure of the script.

If this feature is included in the next version of Retrospect Server for Mac, and if this new version meets the expected feature and delivery date, I may seriously reconsider my intention to switch to another backup software (like BRU)...

Bigger Data segments for FTP

Device trouble: “Vinter07-08”, error 241 (FTP: maximum number of data segments reached).
