Other than boot the Disaster Recovery CD, nothing was restored.

The environment is Windows 2000 Professional and Retrospect Pro 6.5. Hardware is HP Pavillion with Pentium III, Adaptec 1205SA SATA PCI card and 100G Seagate SATA disk. After several years and a number of fruitless tries, I finally got it right and created a bootable CD-ROM yesterday. To prove it would finally boot, I booted from the CD-ROM drive. After the CD had fully booted, I took the CD out and ctl-alt-del to reboot main disk. The SATA disk would not boot.

To recover, I tried every Setup boot order change I could think of, but with no success. The HP still had an old, unused IDE 12G Quantum drive that came with the computer installed; I got the Win2K SP4 install CD-ROM and reinstalled Windows 2000. I had to install a driver for the Adaptec 1205SA SATA card to be able to see the SATA disk. All the data is there, and no sign of any damage. No obvious overlays of the master or NTFS boot sectors. It just will not boot. Any ideas anyone?

Why would the Retrospect 6.5 Disaster Recovery CD take any uncommanded action against the disk?

Retrospect 7.5 question

Question: I am doing a "tranfer backup sets" copy from disk to tape and when the copy process finished it is now going back and it looks like it is comparing what is on disk with what is on tape, and copying files that it missed? - even though I turned off verification. i am just guessing that is what is happening. Storage is to a RAID array in the Proliant, and is also saved to an external hard drive.

On two of our computers, on for as long as we've been doing the backups, and one more recently, we have installed QuickBooks Premier Edition accounting software.

My problem is that on a computer that may have a hard disk with less than 15GB of data, I'm getting 5-10GB backups. It ONLY occurs on the two computers running QuickBooks, no other computer acts the same way.

I have Retrospect set up for scheduled backups every day, 'Normal' mode. I use the Save Source Snapshots for Restore, Match Source Volumes to Catalog Files, Don't add duplicates to backup Set. I back up the System State, and have all four Security Options set, we back up open files, and protect the multi volume datasets, which I don't think I have anyway. My SQL and Exchange servers are set for Differential backups.

I have no idea what Retrospect is doing, although since it doesn't act this way on computers that don't have Quickbooks, I'm sure it isn't Retrospect. If anyone has any idea as to why or what or how to make it so I don't get huge backup sets, I'd appreciate it.

One of the backup sets is password protected, and I don't have the password for it, so every time I need to do a Recycle Backup, I need to go hunt down the person with the password, and it makes it difficult.

Any help that anyone can give me would be useful.

Thank you in advance,
Here's the basic context --

--Windows XP Service Pack 2, behaving normally with other applications (Adobe graphics apps, video editing)

--Retrospect 7.5.508 (Just updated from 7.0, in attempt to resolve this problem)

--Backing up USB external hard drive, and a network hard drive (similar behavior with both)

--Backing up both large (500 MB to multi-GB) and small files.

--Backing up to HP ultrium 230 LTO-1 external SCSI tape drive.

After a variable amount of backup (usually between 10 and 20 GB), the system crashes with a Blue Screen of Death. After a brief hold on the BSOD, it restarts, and says the system has recovered from a serious error.

When I restart Retrospect, I attempt to get the Retrospect catalog straightened out with "Update existing catalog." Sometimes this works, and I can try again. Sometimes when I try to backup after the update it says the catalog is out of sync and to use Update to put it back in sync. The only way around this loop seems to be to tell Retrospect to skip the current member and continue with a new tape. I don't want to do this, because I shouldn't have to, and because the tapes are $32 a piece, and I'm likely to face the same problem again within an hour or two.

I've seen various posts about problems similar to this, but I haven't yet found any really definitive discussion or explanation.

Does anyone here understand this BSOD behavior pattern?

Is there an easy fix? Is there a Windows file I need to replace? Is there a configuration or registry setting that would help?

(I'm currently trying a backup with "backup Open Files" turned OFF. I don't know yet if it will succeed ... )
Hi,

Retrospect was working fine until yesterday morning, when it locked up whilst cancelling a scheduled backup.

Now it comes up saying that I am upgrading and asking for the serial number again, the status bar at the bottom of the screen indicates backups that are back in April - it is as though it has lost its settings and reset everything back to the point of upgrade in April.

Can anyone advise what might have become corrupted and how we get back to where we whould be?

I can't get into the log viewer as I can't load retrospect at the moment, but I loaded it up in notepad. I have included an extract from recent entries below.

Any advice gratefully received.
It completes way to fast, "writing" 13.2GB of data in a couple of seconds. In fact, when I try to restore the data into a different folder, nothing gets restored. The speed that gets reported by retrospect activity monitor is some insanely high number. This is on a new tape, and I have retried this a couple of times, erasing the tape, then retrying. I have the latest updates for the driver and the program itself.
I am using an add-in PCI Firewire card, and the cable from the exabyte packetloader is an 800-to-400-pin cable. The device shows up fine in Retrospect, and so does the library. when it loads and unloads tapes into the tape drive, the LCD readout screen correctly reflects what is happening in the activity monitor. I am having a really bad time seetting up my retrospect to back up to a NAS storage device. My device is an IOMEGA StorCenter. I have successfully set it up with an IP address, and added it to my server and workstations as a mapped drive. I can write to it, read from it, just like it was another drive on my system. Retrospect evidently can write to it too, because after the "duplicate" function finishes, the correct folders and file names are created on the NAS, but the files are ZERO length, and retrospect generates a HUGE (55 megabytes) error log stating "error 1017, insufficient permissions". I have performed the password assignment in the volumes database, and on the preferences security page, and on the members properties as instructed by retrospect. I have put HOURS into this project, and all I get is a big error file. I can do the duplicate in windows just fine, so I know the drive is working and attached correctly, but I can't let retrospect run unattended or I get the errors....HELP PLEASE!
